iPhone Tips and Tricks

Activation Tips and Tricks

1. Activation Fee

If you have any delays (or just make one up) you can call AT&T customer service and will usually refund the $36 activation fee as a courtesy.

Inform them of the following message:

iPhone activations are not currently available due to scheduled AT&T system maintenance. We apologize for the inconvenience this causes. To activate your iPhone, please connect it again after 3pm EST Sunday.

2. Re-Name your iPhone

Click on your iPhone's name (double-click) and it will open a text-edit field which will allow you to re-name your iPhone whatever you wish: Jack's Awesome New iPhone

3. What's My Number

Apple makes this very easy. Select, Settings -> Phone. Your phone number appears in the top: My Number: (927) 993-2564. If you sync your iPhone with your computer you can also identify it by its phone number (under sources).

4. Lock your Sim Car

If you don't think you are going to be buying another expensive phone you can lock your SIM card for usage only with your current phone by going to Setting -> Phone -> Sim PIN. Selecting a pin will lock your SIM card. When you activate this feature you will have to enter the SIM numerical-password every time you power on your iPhone. You can always get another SIM card from your carrier if needed, usually for free.

Navigation Tips and Tricks

1. The Tilt Experience

The iPhone uses a unique technology (accelerometer) to detect the X and Y axis when your iPhone tilts. Several of Apples popular applications like Safari and Image Displays change the display based on its side.

  • Thus, If you have adjusted your iPhone for third-party access we recommend you take a look at the Buttefly.app game which uses the iPhone's accelerometer technology to manipular the 3-D experience.

2. Flipping (i.e. scrolling)

Dragging or scrolling will not choose or activate the items you press or pass by on on the iPhone's screen. Try is on any screen!

3. Conversations

If you want to start a new conversation but don't want to go through the step-by-step process of creating a new message, selecting contact from list or phone number you can go directly to your contact's info page and tap Text Message on the bottom.

4. Delete Mode

If your angry, bored, or just don't want to kee it you can delete the previous conversation or contact by swiping your finger across any contact name and the Delete button will pop-up.

Typing Tips and Tricks

1. Correct Grammar

If you get frustrated typing in the apostrophe in won't or can't - don't bother! The iPhone has been programmed to recognize common English words.

2. That's A Lot of Numbers

If you are typing a lot of numbers or punctuations (comma, period, aprostraph), save time by dragging.

  • Example: Drag from the .?123 button to the number of punctuation you want to use like 7, ?, ', etc..
  • Another great trick is to press the space bar when you want to go back to the alphabet menu. Also, depending on what firmware you have the iPhone will add a period to your sentences if you double-click the space bar.

3. Auto-Capitalization

The iPhone can be changed to automatically capitalize your beginning sentences through the following process settings: Settings -> General -> Keyboard Preferences.

Phone Usage

1. Dual Usage

If you want to run normal iPhone applications during your phone calls click Home and select the application to open. However, you will not be able to surf the web unless you are using a Wi-Fi connection.

2. Headphones

If you are using your headphones and your iPhone rings then both the handset and the plugged-in headphones will ring. So relax and don't think you will miss a call.

Messages and E-mail

1. International E-mail

If you want to send an e-mail through you phone internationall you will need your carriers SMS Gateway Address. Here is a small list when I called:

AT&T's and Cingular's

  • yournumber@cingularme.com
  • yournumber@mycingular.com
  • yournumber@cingular.net
  • yournumber@txt.att.net
  • yournumber@mobile.att.net

2. Useless Edit

It is somewhat pointeless to have the edit button on your inbox screen if you want to delete a message: Just swipe your finger and it will delete the message, or rather have a confirmation message you want to delete it. If you want it back go to Trash (Back, Back, Trash)

Music

1. Ringtones

You can access your ringtones folder directory here: /var/root/Media/iTunes_Control/Ringtones. A useful application is Installer.app which allows you to use songs from your iPhone music library as ringtones.

2. Don't Buy Ringtones if you already have them

You don't need to keep buying "special" tones if you already have them on a CD or other format. Use a third-party installed - they're everywhere.

3. Love to read...well sortof

If you want to sync your audiobooks, make sure you add them to your playlist before you begin. You can find some really useful books through iTunes or Audible.com
